What is Natural Selection?01:32

What is Natural Selection?

129.6K
Natural selection is an evolutionary process in which individuals with survival-promoting traits reproduce at higher rates. These favorable traits become more common within a population or species. Naturally selected traits initially arise via random genetic mutations. In order for selection to occur, there must be variation within a population, the trait controlling the variation must be heritable, and there must be an evolutionary advantage for variation in the trait.

Drug Distribution: Volume of Distribution01:25

Drug Distribution: Volume of Distribution

7.5K
The volume of distribution refers to the theoretical volume necessary to contain the entire amount of an administered drug at the same concentration observed in the blood plasma. The body's intracellular fluid compartment, which makes up two-thirds of the total body water, is contrasted with the extracellular fluid compartment—comprising plasma and interstitial fluid—that accounts for one-third. The volume of distribution can vary depending on the characteristics of the drug.

Variation: Normal Distribution, Range, and Standard Deviation

In the field of psychology, there are several ways to organize measurements of a trait, feature, or characteristic (i.e., variables). Qualitative data, such as ethnicity, can be tabulated into a frequency count to provide information about the proportion, as well as the variety of groups in a sample or population. On the other hand, researchers can perform a wider set of calculations on quantitative data. The mean, mode, and median, for instance, are central tendency measures to identify a...

F Distribution01:19

F Distribution

10.7K
The F distribution was named after Sir Ronald Fisher, an English statistician. The F statistic is a ratio (a fraction) with two sets of degrees of freedom; one for the numerator and one for the denominator. The F distribution is derived from the Student's t distribution. The values of the F distribution are squares of the corresponding values of the t distribution. One-Way ANOVA expands the t test for comparing more than two groups. The scope of that derivation is beyond the level of this...

Types of Selection

45.2K
Natural selection influences the frequencies of particular alleles and phenotypes within populations in several different ways. Primarily, natural selection can be directional, stabilizing, or disruptive. Directional selection favors one extreme trait and shifts the population towards that phenotype while selecting against individuals displaying alternate traits. Stabilizing selection favors an intermediate trait with a narrow range of variation. Deviation from the optimal phenotype towards an...

Area of Science:

  • Computer Science
  • Network Engineering
  • Distributed Systems

Background:

  • Traditional centrality measures (sociocentric) require global network knowledge, limiting their use in large or dynamic networks.
  • Egocentric centrality measures utilize local network information, making them suitable for distributed environments.
  • The vehicle selection mechanism (VSM) is a distributed approach for ranking vehicles in a network.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the effectiveness of egocentric measures within a VSM for distributed information management systems.
  • To assess the viability of egocentric centrality for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs).

Main Methods:

  • Implemented and evaluated the egocentric betweenness measure for node importance in VANETs.
  • Compared the performance of egocentric betweenness against sociocentric measures in dynamic network conditions.
  • Utilized a case study to analyze the VSM's effectiveness in information aggregation and knowledge generation.

Main Results:

  • Egocentric measures provide sufficient accuracy for VSM implementation in VANETs.
  • The VSM using egocentric betweenness significantly reduces bandwidth consumption.
  • The VSM effectively overcomes challenges posed by highly dynamic network topologies.
  • Egocentric betweenness demonstrated high similarity to sociocentric measures in dynamic VANETs.

Conclusions:

  • Egocentric centrality measures are a practical and effective alternative to sociocentric measures in VANETs.
  • The VSM, powered by egocentric betweenness, enhances distributed information management in dynamic vehicular environments.
  • This study confirms the utility of egocentric measures for improving VANET performance and scalability.
