    Background:

    • Disaster triage is a critical skill for emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, often performed infrequently.
    • Screen-based simulation (SBS) offers accessible, asynchronous training for disaster triage.
    • The correlation between SBS performance and immersive simulation outcomes in triage accuracy remains unclear.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To measure the correlation between disaster triage accuracy in SBS and immersive simulation performance.
    • To assess improvements in triage accuracy after SBS intervention compared to baseline and previous immersive simulation studies.

    Main Methods:

    • A nested cohort study within a randomized controlled trial (RCT) involving paramedics and EMTs.
    • Participants completed an immersive simulation, engaged with a disaster triage SBS ('60 Seconds to Survival') for 13 weeks, and repeated the immersive simulation.
    • Triage accuracy was compared before and after SBS exposure, and between exposed and unexposed groups.

    Main Results:

    • Participants showed a significant improvement in triage accuracy in the immersive simulation post-SBS (73.1% to 85.8%, P=0.004).
    • No correlation was found between SBS triage accuracy improvement and performance gains in the immersive simulation.
    • Improvement in triage accuracy was comparable to that observed with immersive simulation as the sole educational intervention.

    Conclusions:

    • Screen-based simulation education significantly enhances disaster triage accuracy in immersive settings for EMS personnel.
    • While SBS improves performance, direct correlation between SBS accuracy and immersive simulation performance was not established.
    • The educational impact of SBS on triage accuracy is comparable to immersive simulation interventions.
