Assessing Body Temperature - Rectal

Rectal temperature measurement is considered the most precise method for assessing core body temperature and typically registers higher than oral temperature. For adults, the rectal thermometer should be inserted 1 to 1.5 inches into the rectum to obtain the most accurate reading.

Background:

Rectal paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors.
Early diagnosis and surgical management are crucial.

Observation:

A 57-year-old woman presented with lower abdominal pain and bloody bowel discharge.
Initial diagnosis of rectal tumor confirmed as paraganglioma post-biopsy and surgery.

Findings:

The patient experienced recurrence three years post-surgery, necessitating reoperation.
Chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and dacarbazine (CVD) was administered for further recurrence.
Disease progression occurred after 15 cycles of CVD, leading to best supportive care.

Implications:

This case highlights the challenges in managing recurrent rectal paragangliomas.
Aggressive treatment strategies may be required for advanced or recurrent disease.
Further research into optimal therapeutic approaches for this rare tumor is warranted.
