Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.9K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

The Evidence for Evolution02:55

The Evidence for Evolution

48.3K
Genetic variations accumulating within populations over generations give rise to biological evolution. Evolutionary changes can result in the formation of novel varieties and entire new species. These changes are responsible for the diverse forms of life inhabiting the planet. The evidence for evolution suggests that all living organisms descended from common ancestors.

Convergent Evolution01:54

Convergent Evolution

33.0K
Evolution shapes the features of organisms over time, ensuring that they are suited for the environments in which they live. Sometimes, selection pressure leads to the rise of similar but unrelated adaptations in organisms with no recent common ancestors, a process known as convergent evolution.

Band Theory02:35

Band Theory

17.2K
When two or more atoms come together to form a molecule, their atomic orbitals combine and molecular orbitals of distinct energies result. In a solid, there are a large number of atoms, and therefore a large number of atomic orbitals that may be combined into molecular orbitals. These groups of molecular orbitals are so closely placed together to form continuous regions of energies, known as the bands.
The energy difference between these bands is known as the band gap.

Attribution Theory00:56

Attribution Theory

13.8K
Behavior is a product of both the situation (e.g., cultural influences, social roles, and the presence of bystanders) and of the person (e.g., personality characteristics). Subfields of psychology tend to focus on one influence or behavior over others. Situationism is the view that our behavior and actions are determined by our immediate environment and surroundings. In contrast, dispositionism holds that our behavior is determined by internal factors (Heider, 1958).

Summary

Ego-state theory views personality as multiple ego states. Ego-state therapy, evolving from hypnotherapy, uses guided hypnotic dissociation, potentially explaining its effectiveness in modern psychotherapy.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychotherapy

Background:

  • Human personality is conceptualized as a composite structure of multiple ego states.
  • Ego-state theory and therapy have historical roots in psychological thought.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the origins of ego-state theory and therapy.
  • To discuss the concept of human personality as a structure comprising numerous ego states.
  • To review the historical roots and evolution of ego-state therapy.

Main Methods:

  • Historical review of ego-state theory and therapy.
  • Identification of the evolution from classic hypnotherapy to modern methods.
  • Analysis of contemporary psychotherapeutic methods potentially utilizing ego-state concepts.

Main Results:

  • Ego-state therapy has evolved significantly from its origins in classic hypnotherapy.
  • Various authors have described ego-state therapy under different names and approaches.
  • Core concepts of ego-state theory and therapy, particularly guided hypnotic dissociation, may be fundamental to the effectiveness of many modern psychotherapeutic techniques.

Conclusions:

  • Ego-state theory provides a framework for understanding personality as multifaceted.
  • The principles of ego-state therapy, rooted in guided hypnotic dissociation, appear to be a common factor in the success of diverse contemporary psychotherapeutic modalities.
