Many adolescents do not attend post-abortion checkups or use effective contraception. Interventions involving social workers and parental support can improve checkup rates and contraceptive use.
Area of Science:
- Adolescent Health
- Reproductive Health
- Public Health
Background:
- Post-abortion care is crucial for adolescent well-being.
- Adolescents face unique challenges in accessing and adhering to healthcare recommendations.
- Understanding factors influencing post-abortion health behaviors is essential for targeted interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate post-abortion health behaviors in adolescents.
- To assess the association between pre-abortion interventions and post-abortion checkups.
- To examine factors influencing the uptake of effective contraceptives post-abortion.
Main Methods:
- 172 adolescents under 19 were recruited pre-abortion across 10 Israeli hospitals.
- Participants were followed up via phone at one and two months post-abortion.
- Data collected included checkup attendance and contraceptive use, with analysis of pre-abortion intervention effects.
Main Results:
- A quarter of adolescents did not attend post-abortion checkups, citing personal reasons.
- Effective contraceptive use increased post-abortion but remained suboptimal.
- Longer counseling, checkups at the abortion site, and parental involvement improved checkup rates.
- Prescription of oral contraceptive pills at abortion increased uptake one month later.
Conclusions:
- Nonadherence to post-abortion recommendations poses health risks and increases unintended pregnancies.
- Evidence-based social work interventions are needed to promote behavioral change.
- Targeted strategies are required to improve post-abortion care and contraceptive adherence in adolescents.
