Imaging Studies I: Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder Studies

366
Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) StudiesKidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) studies are standard diagnostic imaging procedures used to assess the anatomy of the urinary system. They are commonly utilized for patients experiencing abdominal pain or urinary symptoms. By using a simple X-ray of the abdomen, KUB studies can reveal structural and pathological abnormalities within the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. These studies are particularly valuable in diagnosing kidney stones, urinary...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

533
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Observational Studies01:11

Observational Studies

11.1K
Observational studies are a type of analytical study where researchers observe events without any interventions. In other words, the researcher does not influence the response variable or the experiment's outcome.
There are three types of observational studies – Prospective, retrospective, and cross-sectional.
Prospective Study
Prospective studies, also known as longitudinal or cohort studies, are carried out by collecting future data from groups sharing similar characteristics. One...

Studying the Cytoskeleton01:17

Studying the Cytoskeleton

9.6K
The cytoskeletal architecture can be studied using different microscopic and biochemical techniques. Electron microscopy was instrumental in discovering the cytoskeletal architecture around the 1960s, which allowed obtaining structural information at a high-resolution level. However, the sample preparation procedure often limits this ability in biological samples. Several protocols have been developed over the years to optimize sample preparation. In one of the protocols known as rotary...

Bioavailability Study Design: Single Versus Multiple Dose Studies

246
Bioavailability studies are essential for understanding how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted in the body. These studies assess the extent and rate at which the active pharmaceutical agent becomes available at the site of action. The design of bioavailability studies can involve single-dose or multiple-dose regimens, each with distinct advantages and limitations.Single-dose studies are the preferred approach due to their simplicity and reduced drug exposure for...

    Summary

Chemsex, or drug use during sex, affects 14% of male patients at a sexual health clinic. Men who have sex with men reported higher rates of chemsex and associated infections.

    Area of Science:

    • Sexual health research
    • Public health
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Chemsex (drug use during sex) is a growing concern within sexual health.
    • Understanding chemsex prevalence and associated factors is crucial for targeted interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of chemsex among male patients at Olafiaklinikken, Oslo.
    • To identify associations between chemsex and mental health, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and sexual behaviors in men who have sex with men (MSM) and men who have sex with women (MSW).

    Main Methods:

    • An anonymous, questionnaire-based study was conducted.
    • Data were collected from male patients at a sexual health clinic between July 1 and October 20, 2016.
    • A response rate of 96% was achieved, with 1,013 participants included.

    Main Results:

    • Overall, 14% (144/1013) of male patients reported chemsex in the past year.
    • Chemsex prevalence was higher among men who have sex with men (17%) compared to men who have sex with women (12%).
    • MSM reporting chemsex were more likely to report HIV infection, syphilis, over ten sexual partners, and participation in chemsex parties. MSW reporting chemsex were more likely to report psychological distress.

    Conclusions:

    • Healthcare systems need to better address the needs of chemsex users.
    • Information on harm reduction strategies and support for cessation or reduction of chemsex use is essential.
