Background:

Traditional ultrasound simulators often require expensive, dedicated hardware, limiting accessibility for training.
Developing cost-effective and accessible ultrasound training solutions is crucial for medical education.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and evaluate a low-cost personal ultrasound simulator using readily available technology.
To assess the feasibility and trainee feedback on this novel simulator.

Main Methods:

Created a software program utilizing a smartphone as a "mock-probe" and a laptop as a "mock ultrasound machine".
Employed smartphone's accelerometer and gyroscope for real-time motion sensing and image simulation.
Administered a written survey to first-year radiology residents for feedback.

Main Results:

Developed a personal ultrasound training simulator (Persimus) capable of 2-axis motion sensing and image display.
75% of eligible residents participated in the survey.
Residents reported high satisfaction, with mean scores of 8.44 ± 1.33 for utility and overall impression on a 1-10 Likert scale.

Conclusions:

Personal ultrasound simulators are technically feasible and a viable educational tool.
First-year radiology residents perceived the simulator as useful and were highly satisfied with its integration into their training.
