A new electrochemical sensor using molecular imprinting polymers (MIPs) can detect ractopamine (RAC) in water. This sensor offers high sensitivity and selectivity for monitoring organic pollutants.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Electrochemistry
- Environmental Science
Background:
- Ractopamine (RAC) is a concerning organic pollutant in water.
- Developing sensitive and selective detection methods for RAC is crucial for environmental monitoring.
Purpose of the Study:
- To fabricate a novel molecular imprinting polymer (MIP)-based electrochemical sensor for sensitive RAC detection.
- To investigate the sensor's performance, including its dynamic linear range, detection limit, selectivity, and reproducibility.
Main Methods:
- Fabrication of a MIP-based sensor using Fe3O4 nanobeads and gold nanoparticles on a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) substrate via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization.
- Utilized cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) for sensor characterization and RAC detection.
- Theoretical calculations were employed to confirm the role of gold nanoparticles.
Main Results:
- The sensor demonstrated a wide dynamic linear range of 0.002 to 0.1 μM for RAC detection with a high correlation coefficient (0.992).
- Achieved a remarkably low detection limit of 0.02 nM (S/N = 3), indicating high sensitivity.
- The sensor exhibited excellent selectivity and reproducibility for RAC detection in water.
Conclusions:
- The developed MIP-based electrochemical sensor shows significant potential for the effective monitoring of organic pollutants like RAC in water.
- The integration of Fe3O4 nanobeads, gold nanoparticles, and RGO enhances sensor performance for environmental applications.

Molecular Weight of Step-Growth Polymers
As the step-growth polymerization involves step-wise condensation of monomers, the molecular weight also builds up eventually. Consequently, high molecular weight polymers are obtained at the late stages of the polymerization, where 99% of monomers have been consumed.
