Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) neutrophil elastase levels significantly increase 48 and 72 hours after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier integrity did not influence these elevated PMN elastase levels in TBI patients.

- This study is the first to report significantly increased CSF PMN elastase levels in the early post-TBI phase (48-72 hours).
- BCSFB function does not appear to significantly influence PMN elastase levels in the early stages after TBI.
