Background:

  • Mastitis, a significant economic concern in livestock farming, is often caused by various Staphylococcus species.
  • This study investigates the pathological effects of specific Staphylococcus species isolated from bovine milk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the pathological changes in mice following inoculation with Staphylococcus epidermidis, S. chromogenes, S. haemolyticus, and S. aureus.
  • To compare the pathogenicity of S. aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococcal (CNS) species in a murine mastitis model.

Main Methods:

  • Mice were inoculated with Staphylococcus species into the mammary gland and euthanized at various time points (6-96 hours).
  • Mammary gland and systemic organ (liver, kidney, spleen, heart, lung, lymph node) weights, gross pathology, and histopathology were assessed.

Main Results:

  • S. aureus and S. haemolyticus infection led to increased mammary gland weight.
  • Histopathological analysis revealed severe damage in S. aureus-infected mammary glands, while CNS infections showed moderate effects and host-mediated recovery.
  • No significant histological alterations were observed in non-mammary organs.

Conclusions:

  • Staphylococcus aureus induces more severe mastitis in mice compared to CNS species.
  • This research establishes a novel mouse model for studying CNS mastitis, valuable for future research.
