Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a meta-analysis to determine the relationship between shortened telomere length and stroke.
  • To consolidate findings from existing studies to provide a more robust estimate.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was performed on PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science for studies on stroke and telomere length.
  • Meta-analysis was conducted using STATA 12.0.
  • Heterogeneity and publication bias were assessed using Cochran Q test, I index, Begg funnel plot, and Egger test.

Main Results:

  • The meta-analysis included 11 studies with 25,340 participants.
  • A significant association was found between shortened telomere length and stroke (OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.13-2.0, P = .005).
  • However, subgroup analyses of prospective (OR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1-1.98, P = .051) and retrospective studies (OR: 1.89, 95% CI: 0.96-3.72, P = .067) did not yield statistically significant results.

Conclusions:

  • Shortened telomere length is significantly associated with an increased risk of stroke overall.
  • The association did not reach statistical significance in prospective or retrospective study subgroups.
  • Further research may be needed to clarify the role of telomere length in stroke etiology across different study designs.
