Background:

Hearing impairment presents significant challenges to vocational participation.
Understanding factors influencing work retention for this population is essential.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify and explore factors facilitating or hindering work participation for individuals with hearing impairment.
To develop a framework for understanding working life trajectories in the context of hearing loss.

Main Methods:

In-depth interviews with 21 adults (32-67 years) with hearing impairment and vocational affiliation.
Grounded theory approach for data analysis.

Main Results:

A conceptual framework of working life trajectories across pre-acknowledgement, acknowledgement, and post-acknowledgement phases was developed.
Personal, workplace, and service provider contexts significantly influence these trajectories.
Accumulated risk factors increase disconnection likelihood, while facilitating factors support sustainable work participation.

Conclusions:

Extended workplace support, involving managers, colleagues, and professionals, is needed to prevent exhaustion and facilitate participation.
Joint action for communicative participation and shared responsibility for accommodations are vital.
Occupational and aural rehabilitation must address fatigue prevention and knowledge transfer, with systematic multidisciplinary worksite follow-up.
