Summary

A rare case of Ewing sarcoma in a 5-month-old infant

Area of Science:

Background:

  • Ewing sarcoma is a rare bone cancer.
  • It typically affects children and young adults.
  • Hand involvement is uncommon, especially in infants.

Observation:

  • A 5-month-old male presented with hand pain, erythema, and swelling.
  • Initial antibiotic treatment was ineffective.
  • Radiographs and MRI suggested a neoplastic process.

Findings:

  • Open biopsy confirmed Ewing sarcoma of the metacarpal.
  • The patient received chemotherapy and surgical resection.
  • This represents an extremely rare presentation of Ewing sarcoma.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in pediatric hand masses.
