Identifying physiological markers for multimorbidity is crucial. This review highlights dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), interleukin 6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), lipoprotein (Lp), and cystatin C (Cyst-C) as key indicators for future research.
Area of Science:
- Biomedical research
- Gerontology
- Clinical diagnostics
Background:
- Multimorbidity, the co-occurrence of multiple diseases, poses a significant health challenge.
- Early identification of multimorbidity can be aided by specific physiological markers.
- Current evidence on physiological markers for multimorbidity is limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review and identify physiological markers associated with multimorbidity.
- To consolidate existing knowledge on biomarkers for coexisting diseases.
Main Methods:
- A comprehensive systematic search of multiple databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, etc.) was conducted up to May 2018.
- Included studies reported physiological markers linked to multimorbidity or its future development.
- The review protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42017055522).
Main Results:
- The search yielded 922 papers, with 18 ultimately included in the full review.
- Only five studies focused on multimorbidity generally, identifying five key physiological markers.
- Identified markers include dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), interleukin 6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), lipoprotein (Lp), and cystatin C (Cyst-C).
Conclusions:
- There is a significant gap in research regarding physiological markers for multimorbidity.
- DHEAS, IL-6, CRP, Lp, and Cyst-C represent promising candidates for further investigation.
- These markers could serve as a foundation for developing early detection strategies for multimorbidity.
