Summary

Protective factors like positive mental health and social support distinguish individuals with suicidal thoughts from those without. However, these factors do not differentiate between those who only have thoughts and those who attempt suicide.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of protective factors in distinguishing between non-ideators, suicide ideators, and suicide attempters.
  • To identify psychological and social factors associated with different levels of suicidal behavior.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving three groups of inpatients: non-ideators (n=32), current ideators (n=37), and ideators with a history of attempts (n=26).
  • Assessment of positive mental health, self-esteem, trust in higher guidance, social support, and reasons for living.

  • Non-ideators reported significantly higher levels of positive mental health, social support, reasons for living, and self-esteem compared to both ideators and attempters.

  • Protective factors effectively differentiate individuals with suicidal ideation from those without.
  • The same protective factors do not differentiate between individuals who experience suicidal ideation and those who have made suicide attempts.
