Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) significantly improve insomnia symptoms. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials confirms MBIs as an effective treatment for insomnia, though long-term effects require further study.
Area of Science:
- Behavioral Medicine
- Sleep Science
- Psychology
Background:
- Insomnia is a prevalent sleep disorder with significant public health implications.
- Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) show promise for insomnia treatment, but evidence synthesis is needed.
- Previous research on MBIs for insomnia has yielded mixed findings.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically evaluate the efficacy of MBIs in treating insomnia.
- To synthesize findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using meta-analysis.
Main Methods:
- A comprehensive search of English and Chinese databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, Cochrane, WanFang, CNKI) was conducted.
- Five RCTs involving 520 participants were included in the meta-analysis.
- Random effects models were used to calculate standardized mean differences (SMDs) and risk ratios (RRs).
Main Results:
- MBIs significantly improved insomnia symptoms compared to control groups (SMD: -1.01, 95% CI: -1.28 to -0.75).
- Improvements were measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.
- The analysis showed no statistical heterogeneity (I² = 0%).
Conclusions:
- MBIs are an effective treatment for insomnia.
- The findings support the clinical utility of MBIs for individuals with insomnia.
- Further research is warranted to investigate the long-term effectiveness of MBIs for insomnia.
