Bhutanese medicinal plants yielded compounds with potent immunomodulatory effects. Scoulerine boosted immune responses, while bergapten suppressed them, offering new avenues for cancer and autoimmune disease treatments.
Area of Science:
- Phytochemistry
- Immunology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Plant-derived compounds are increasingly recognized for their therapeutic potential in treating cancer, infectious diseases, and autoimmune disorders.
- Bhutanese Sowa Rigpa medicinal plants represent a rich source of novel phytochemicals with potential biological activities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize phytochemicals from Bhutanese medicinal plants.
- To evaluate the immunomodulatory and cytotoxic properties of purified compounds.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of 40 phytochemicals from five Bhutanese medicinal plants.
- Testing 14 purified compounds for immunomodulatory effects on murine dendritic cells (DCs).
- Assessing cytotoxicity against a human cholangiocyte cell line using real-time cell monitoring.
Main Results:
- Scoulerine demonstrated adjuvant-like properties, significantly upregulating MHC-I expression.
- Bergapten exhibited immunosuppressive effects, downregulating MHC-I and co-stimulatory molecule expression.
- Both scoulerine and bergapten showed low cytotoxicity against normal cells.
Conclusions:
- Defined compounds from Bhutanese medicinal plants possess significant immunomodulatory potential.
- Scoulerine and bergapten modulate dendritic cell activity, highlighting their therapeutic promise for immune-related diseases.
