This study maps drought-sensitive vegetation areas in Iran using the Vegetation Health Index (VHI). Arid and hyper-arid regions show higher vegetation vulnerability to drought, crucial for risk management.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Science
- Remote Sensing
- Climatology
Background:
- Drought significantly degrades vegetation, impacting ecosystems and agriculture.
- Identifying drought-sensitive vegetation is key for effective drought risk management.
- The Vegetation Health Index (VHI) can quantify vegetation condition and drought vulnerability.
Purpose of the Study:
- To map vegetation vulnerability to drought across Iran's diverse climatic zones.
- To assess drought probability using the Vegetation Health Index (VHI).
- To analyze VHI variations across hyper-arid, arid, semi-arid, and humid regions.
Main Methods:
- Calculated Temperature Condition Index (TCI) from MODIS Land Surface Temperature (LST).
- Calculated Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) from MODIS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI).
- Combined TCI and VCI to compute VHI, then derived Probability of Vegetation Vulnerability Index (PVVI) from 2000-2017.
Main Results:
- PVVI was highest in arid and hyper-arid zones across all study periods.
- Peak PVVI in humid and semi-arid/semi-humid zones occurred in April.
- Peak PVVI in arid and hyper-arid zones was observed in May.
Conclusions:
- PVVI is influenced by climatic and topographic factors.
- The developed PVVI is a valuable tool for assessing vegetation drought vulnerability.
- Findings support targeted drought risk management strategies in vulnerable Iranian regions.

Probability in Statistics
An example of a simple event is a coin toss. The result of a coin toss is either a head or a tail. Here, head and tail are two simple events. These two simple events make up the sample space. Further, the probability of an event occurring falls within the range of 0 to 1. The probability of an...
