Dental practitioners showed high engagement in research over 12 years. Strategies used by the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) can guide other health professions in engaging practitioners.
Area of Science:
- Dental research
- Health services research
- Practice-based research networks
Background:
- Limited data exists on long-term practitioner involvement in practice-based research networks (PBRNs).
- Understanding practitioner engagement is crucial for the success and sustainability of PBRNs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine practitioner participation over 12 years in the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) studies and meetings.
- To determine the average length of practitioner participation.
- To identify practitioner- and practice-level characteristics associated with participation.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of practitioner participation in network activities from 2005 to 2017.
- Inclusion criteria: practitioners in the US who completed an enrollment questionnaire and engaged in network activities.
- Analysis included 3,669 practitioners and 23 selected network studies (15 clinical, 8 questionnaire).
Main Results:
- 86% of practitioners participated in at least one network activity.
- Questionnaire studies had the highest participation rate (81%), followed by clinical studies (21%) and meetings (19%).
- Among early enrollees, 20% participated in multiple activities for 5-9 years, and 14% for 10-12 years.
Conclusions:
- The National Dental PBRN successfully engaged practitioners with high participation rates over a 12-year period.
- The network's engagement strategies offer a potential model for other allied health PBRNs.
- Practitioner characteristics influencing participation varied by activity type.
