Background:

  • Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a common condition.
  • Early screening via clinical examination and ultrasound is standard practice.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with developmental hip dislocation at 21 months of age.
  • Initial ultrasonography at 5 weeks of age showed normal findings.

Findings:

  • This case demonstrates that DDH can manifest later in infancy or early childhood.
  • Normal early screening does not entirely rule out the possibility of late-onset DDH.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for DDH even after normal early assessments.
  • Further research is needed to understand the etiology of late-presenting DDH.
