This study found no association between interleukin 1B gene polymorphisms and external apical root resorption (EARR) risk in orthodontic patients. Further research is needed to clarify potential genetic interactions in EARR.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Orthodontics
- Biomaterials
Background:
- External apical root resorption (EARR) is a common complication of orthodontic treatment.
- The genetic factors influencing EARR susceptibility are not fully understood.
- Limited research exists on the relationship between gene polymorphisms and EARR.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review and explore the association between various gene polymorphisms and EARR.
- To conduct a meta-analysis to evaluate the risk of EARR in relation to specific genetic variations.
Main Methods:
- Comprehensive literature search of PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus databases.
- Manual search of bibliographies of relevant articles and textbooks.
- Meta-analysis of identified studies using Odds Ratio (OR) to assess EARR risk.
Main Results:
- 17 publications were included in the systematic review, and 7 in the meta-analysis.
- The interleukin 1B (+3954) polymorphism was evaluated for its association with EARR risk.
- No significant association was found between the studied gene polymorphism and the risk of EARR in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.
- No publication bias was detected.
Conclusions:
- Current evidence does not support a link between the interleukin 1B (+3954) polymorphism and EARR.
- More research is required to investigate the complex relationship between gene polymorphisms and EARR.
- Further studies are needed to identify specific genetic interactions that may influence EARR.
