Dentists prioritize technical factors over patient preferences when selecting dental treatments. Patient influence on treatment decisions appears minimal among experienced general dentists.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relative importance of technical and patient factors in dentists' selection of alternative dental treatments.
To understand how general dentists weigh various elements when making treatment recommendations.

A mail questionnaire was distributed to 156 general dentists in Washington State.

Dentists who did consider patient factors were less preventive-oriented, more likely to be solo practitioners, worked longer hours, and charged lower prices.

The findings suggest that patient influence on treatment prescriptions may be limited among experienced general dentists.
