Short dental implants offer a viable solution for tooth replacement, especially in cases of limited bone height. This study found a high survival rate and minimal complications after one year of use.
Area of Science:
- Dental Implantology
- Oral Surgery
- Restorative Dentistry
Background:
- Alveolar bone resorption and proximity to vital structures limit implant placement.
- Short dental implants can mitigate the need for bone augmentation, reducing treatment costs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the treatment outcomes and survival rates of short dental implants for single and multiple tooth replacements.
- To assess clinical and radiographic parameters one year after loading and restoration.
Main Methods:
- A study of 55 short dental implants (Bicon system) in 26 patients (aged 21-70) at Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
- Data collected on demographics, implant details, and restoration type.
- Clinical assessments (mobility, pain, suppuration, recession, inflammation) and radiographic evaluation (marginal bone loss, radiolucency) at 3, 6, and 12 months post-placement.
Main Results:
- A 96.4% survival rate for short implants after one year.
- No surviving implants showed >1.5mm marginal bone loss; no mobility, suppuration, or radiolucency observed.
- 8mm implants had a significantly higher survival rate than 6mm implants (p=0.039); higher failure in lower premolar region (p=0.001).
Conclusions:
- Short dental implants are a viable option for tooth replacement when alveolar bone height is less than 10mm.
- The Bicon short implant system demonstrated favorable outcomes in this patient cohort.

Guidelines for Writing Outcome
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...
