Leaving Groups02:14

Leaving Groups

9.7K
The nature of leaving groups strongly influences the outcome of a nucleophilic substitution reaction.
In general, in a nucleophilic substitution reaction, a nucleophile displaces a functional group, called the leaving group, from the substrate to give a substituted product. A leaving group departs the substrate molecule through heterolytic cleavage, taking the pair of electrons with it to become a relatively stable weak base in the form of an anion or a neutral molecule.

Acid Attack on Concrete01:21

Acid Attack on Concrete

756
When acids come into contact with concrete, they initiate a chemical reaction that dissolves the hydrated cement paste. This process leads to softening and structural weakening of the concrete. This issue is commonly observed in environments such as chimneys, sewers, and industrial settings. The severity of the damage increases as the pH of the water interacting with the concrete drops below 6.5. In particular, a pH under 4.5 can cause significant concrete damage.
The rate at which hydrogen...

Nightmares and Night Terrors01:18

Nightmares and Night Terrors

539
Nightmares and night terrors represent two distinct types of sleep disturbances that differ in timing, characteristics, and the sleeper's recall of the event. Nightmares are vivid, disturbing dreams that usually awaken the sleeper from REM sleep, a stage of sleep where brain activity is high, and dreams are most frequent. Upon awakening, individuals often have detailed recollections of their nightmares, which can include themes of threats to survival, security, or self-esteem.

Sulfate Attack on Concrete01:29

Sulfate Attack on Concrete

740
Sulfate attack on concrete is a deterioration process characterized by a whitish discoloration beginning at the edges and corners, accompanied by cracking and spalling. This phenomenon occurs when sulfates react with the components of hardened concrete, forming compounds like calcium sulfate and calcium sulfoaluminate which occupy more space than the substances they replace, causing the concrete to expand and disrupt.
Sulfates from sources like soil, groundwater, or industrial effluents...

Restless Leg Syndrome and Night Terrors

564
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a neurological disorder characterized by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs due to uncomfortable sensations. These sensations typically occur during periods of rest or inactivity, particularly when lying down or sitting, and can severely disrupt sleep.
The exact cause of RLS is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate muscle movement. Imbalances in dopamine levels...

Basic Plant Anatomy: Roots, Stems, and Leaves

64.4K
The primary organs of vascular plants are roots, stems, and leaves, but these structures can be highly variable, adapted for the specific needs and environment of different plant species.

Summary

Workplace terrorist attacks can cause a temporary rise in employee sick leave, particularly for those directly exposed. This increase in sick leave typically returns to baseline levels within 1-3 years.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Psychotraumatology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Workplace violence, including terrorist attacks, can have significant psychological and physiological impacts on employees.
  • Understanding the effects of such events on employee well-being and work absence is crucial for organizational resilience.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify sick leave rates and diagnoses before and after a workplace terrorist attack.
  • To compare sick leave patterns across different employee subgroups based on gender and trauma exposure.

Main Methods:

  • Retrieved sick leave and diagnosis data for ministerial employees from Norwegian Social Insurance Administration Registries.
  • Analyzed data covering a 3-year period before and 3-year period after the 2011 Oslo bombing.

Main Results:

  • Sick leave was initially higher in women than men.
  • Directly exposed employees experienced increased sick leave post-attack, stabilizing within 3 years.
  • No significant sick leave increase was observed in indirectly exposed employees.
  • A trend towards psychological diagnoses was noted among directly exposed women.

Conclusions:

  • A transient increase in sick leave is a potential consequence of workplace terrorist attacks for directly exposed employees.
  • The observed increase in sick leave was modest and lasted for 1-3 years.
  • Findings highlight the need for targeted support for employees following traumatic workplace events.
