Background:

  • Mucormycosis is a rare, fulminant fungal infection caused by Mucorales fungi.
  • It presents as a rapidly progressing necrotizing infection with high mortality rates, often mimicking other soft-tissue infections.
  • Early suspicion is crucial, especially in culture-negative necrotizing infections with vascular patterns.

Observation:

  • A case of orbitomaxillofacial mucormycosis is presented.
  • The infection mimicked necrotizing soft-tissue infections with rapid progression and vascular compromise.
  • Tissue biopsy was essential for diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Multifactorial treatment included radical serial debridement, topical and parenteral amphotericin B, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
  • This comprehensive approach successfully managed the orbitomaxillofacial mucormycosis.
  • The treatment prevented dissemination to the central nervous system and resulted in survival.

Implications:

  • Aggressive surgical debridement combined with antifungal therapy and hyperbaric oxygen can be life-saving in severe mucormycosis.
  • Early diagnosis through tissue biopsy is critical for effective management.
  • This case highlights a successful strategy for treating a life-threatening fungal infection.
