Social Exchange Theory02:06

Social Exchange Theory

40.8K
We have discussed why we form relationships, what attracts us to others, and different types of love. But what determines whether we are satisfied with and stay in a relationship? One theory that provides an explanation is social exchange theory. According to social exchange theory, we act as naïve economists in keeping a tally of the ratio of costs and benefits of forming and maintaining a relationship with others (Rusbult & Van Lange, 2003).

Band Theory

17.2K
When two or more atoms come together to form a molecule, their atomic orbitals combine and molecular orbitals of distinct energies result. In a solid, there are a large number of atoms, and therefore a large number of atomic orbitals that may be combined into molecular orbitals. These groups of molecular orbitals are so closely placed together to form continuous regions of energies, known as the bands.
The energy difference between these bands is known as the band gap.

Glassware Calibration

1.4K
Accurate calibration of glassware, such as volumetric flasks, pipettes, and burettes, is essential to ensure accurate measurements in the analytical laboratory. Calibration helps maintain consistency across measurements and prevents errors arising from inaccurate volumes.
Volumetric flasks: Volumetric flasks are designed to prepare aqueous solutions of precise volumes accurately with a calibration line on the neck. To calibrate a volumetric flask, it is important to fill it with distilled...

Attribution Theory

13.8K
Behavior is a product of both the situation (e.g., cultural influences, social roles, and the presence of bystanders) and of the person (e.g., personality characteristics). Subfields of psychology tend to focus on one influence or behavior over others. Situationism is the view that our behavior and actions are determined by our immediate environment and surroundings. In contrast, dispositionism holds that our behavior is determined by internal factors (Heider, 1958).

Area of Science:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Radar Systems
  • Signal Processing

Background:

  • Phased array radars require precise calibration for accurate airplane surveillance and tracking.
  • Environmental factors like temperature variations and device aging degrade radar performance.
  • Calibrating large-scale phased arrays with thousands of antennas is a time-intensive process.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a fast and efficient calibration method for phased array radars.
  • To address the challenge of time-consuming calibrations in large-scale systems.
  • To maintain high accuracy in airplane surveillance and tracking despite performance degradations.

Main Methods:

  • The proposed method utilizes graph coloring theory to optimize the calibration process.
  • The calibration problem is transformed into a graph coloring problem, minimizing the number of colors (time slots) used.
  • Omnidirectional radiation patterns are leveraged to allow simultaneous calibration of multiple antennas by spatially reusing time slots.

Main Results:

  • Simulations demonstrate a significant reduction in total calibration time.
  • The method effectively recovers the radiation pattern from amplitude and phase errors and noise.
  • The proposed method's calibration time is constant and negligible compared to existing methods.

Conclusions:

  • The graph coloring-based approach offers a substantial improvement in phased array radar calibration efficiency.
  • This method ensures sustained accuracy for airplane surveillance and tracking systems.
  • The technique provides a practical solution for managing the calibration of large-scale phased arrays.
