Transmission tower foundation settlement can be detected by monitoring its vibration characteristics. Changes in modal frequencies under wind load, especially in the X-direction, correlate with settlement displacement, offering a method for foundation integrity assessment.
Area of Science:
- Structural Engineering
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Vibration Analysis
Background:
- Transmission towers are critical infrastructure susceptible to foundation settlement.
- Foundation settlement can compromise structural integrity and operational safety.
- Monitoring tower vibrations offers a non-invasive method to assess foundation conditions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of foundation settlement on the vibration characteristics of a 110 kV transmission tower.
- To establish a correlation between settlement displacement and changes in modal frequencies.
- To propose vibration analysis as an effective method for detecting transmission tower foundation settlement.
Main Methods:
- Experimental measurement of vibration response and environmental parameters using acceleration and meteorological sensors.
- Simulation of tower foundation settlement using a dedicated experimental platform.
- Extraction of low-order modal frequencies via stochastic subspace identification (SSI).
- Temperature correction applied to modal frequencies for accurate analysis.
Main Results:
- Significant changes in X-direction modal frequencies were observed before and after foundation settlement.
- The rate of change in modal frequencies increased proportionally with settlement displacement.
- Temperature-corrected modal frequencies provided reliable data for analysis.
Conclusions:
- Foundation settlement demonstrably alters the vibration characteristics of transmission towers.
- The observed changes in modal frequencies serve as effective indicators for detecting foundation settlement.
- Vibration monitoring presents a viable technique for assessing the health of transmission tower foundations.

In the visual method, metal-ion indicators (metallochromic dyes), which have distinct colors in their free and complex forms, are added to the mixture to signal the titration's end point. They form stable complexes with metal ions, but these complexes are weaker than the corresponding metal–EDTA complexes. As a...
