Summary

Universal Staphylococcal decolonization (USD) is well-accepted by patients undergoing surgery. Logistical challenges, primarily insufficient time, represent the main barrier to completing the decolonization protocol.

Background:

Staphylococcal decolonization significantly reduces the risk of Staphylococcus aureus surgical site infections.
This study investigates patient perspectives on a universal Staphylococcal decolonization (USD) protocol.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate patient acceptance of a universal Staphylococcal decolonization protocol.
To identify barriers to patient compliance with the USD protocol.

Main Methods:

A universal Staphylococcal decolonization protocol was implemented for elective orthopedic, neurosurgical, and cardiac surgeries in October 2013.
Anonymous surveys assessed patient compliance and barriers to protocol completion between November 2014 and April 2015.

Main Results:

A total of 546 patients (42% of 1289) completed the survey.
Patient compliance with the USD protocol was 85%.
Insufficient time before surgery was the primary barrier to completing the protocol.

Conclusions:

The universal Staphylococcal decolonization protocol is acceptable to patients.
Logistical issues, particularly time constraints, are the main obstacles to protocol adherence.
