Patients with chronic conditions desire gameful elements in mobile health (mHealth) apps for self-management. Co-design workshops revealed preferences for positive feedback, customization, and meaningful features beyond gamification.
Area of Science:
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Digital Health
- Health Informatics
Background:
- Gameful designs (gamification) enhance engagement with electronic health and mobile health (mHealth) tools.
- User needs for gameful designs in chronic condition self-management apps are not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- Explore user needs, preferences, and ideas for gameful mobile health (mHealth) self-management apps.
- Utilize participatory design workshops with chronic condition patients.
Main Methods:
- Conducted three sets of co-design workshops with 22 participants with chronic conditions.
- Employed participatory design methods including design games, scenario making, and prototyping.
- Thematically analyzed workshop interactions, products, and suggestions.
Main Results:
- Identified diverse user requirements for gameful elements in mHealth apps.
- Users favored positive, collaborative experiences, customizable avatars, and rewards exchangeable for real-world goods.
- Emphasized the need for core app features to be inherently meaningful and motivating.
Conclusions:
- Users' contextualized needs for gameful mHealth tools in chronic disease self-management were detailed.
- The participatory design approach effectively facilitated creativity and idea generation.
- Findings can inform the design and application of gameful elements in mHealth apps.
