Attribution Theory

13.8K
Behavior is a product of both the situation (e.g., cultural influences, social roles, and the presence of bystanders) and of the person (e.g., personality characteristics). Subfields of psychology tend to focus on one influence or behavior over others. Situationism is the view that our behavior and actions are determined by our immediate environment and surroundings. In contrast, dispositionism holds that our behavior is determined by internal factors (Heider, 1958).

Fundamental Attribution Error

13.8K
According to some social psychologists, people tend to overemphasize internal factors as explanations—or attributions—for the behavior of other people. They tend to assume that the behavior of another person is a trait of that person, and to underestimate the power of the situation on the behavior of others. They tend to fail to recognize when the behavior of another is due to situational variables, and thus to the person’s state. This erroneous assumption is...

Attribution

In social interactions, individuals frequently seek to understand the motivations and causes behind others' behaviors. This fundamental aspect of social perception, known as attribution, plays a crucial role in shaping interpersonal relationships and guiding future actions. Attribution refers to the cognitive process through which people infer the reasons behind others' behaviors, allowing them to assess character traits, intentions, and situational influences.Attribution Theory and Its...

Hydronium and hydroxide ions are present both in pure water and in all aqueous solutions, and their concentrations are inversely proportional as determined by the ion product of water (Kw). The concentrations of these ions in a solution are often critical determinants of the solution’s properties and the chemical behaviors of its other solutes. Two different solutions can differ in their hydronium or hydroxide ion concentrations by a million, billion, or even trillion times. A common means of...

Personal Choice and Fate Attributions

Some individuals interpret life events as a consequence of their personal choices and actions, while others believe that outcomes are dictated by fate or destiny. This divergence in perspective has been examined in psychological and cross-cultural studies, particularly in relation to religious faith and cultural beliefs about causality.Fate and Personal ResponsibilityPeople who emphasize personal responsibility view events as direct consequences of their decisions. For instance, breaking a leg...

Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

9.6K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Area of Science:

  • Criminology
  • Forensic Psychology
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Understanding offender motivations is crucial for effective criminal justice interventions.
  • Existing measures may not adequately differentiate between distinct offending styles.
  • Attributional processes underlying criminal behavior require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate attributional scales for proactive, reactive, and acquisitive offending.
  • To assess the psychometric properties of the newly developed scales.
  • To explore the psychological meaning of these scales in relation to criminal behavior.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized empirical keying, internal consistency, and item performance for scale development.
  • Collected data from six diverse samples (N=1,527) including parole, university, probation, and prison populations.
  • Administered scales measuring proactive, reactive, and acquisitive offending tendencies.

Main Results:

  • Developed the Proactive (10 items), Reactive (10 items), and Acquisitive (15 items) scales.
  • Proactive scale correlated with planning; Reactive scale with affect/person-based motives; Acquisitive scale with other-based motives.
  • Demonstrated convergent and discriminant validity for all scales.

Conclusions:

  • The Proactive, Reactive, and Acquisitive scales provide distinct psychological dimensions of offending.
  • These validated scales can enhance the assessment of offenders.
  • The scales offer valuable insights for tailoring intervention strategies to specific offending types.
