Counterfactual Thinking01:19

Counterfactual Thinking

247
Counterfactual thinking is a cognitive process wherein individuals mentally reconstruct alternative versions of past events, often beginning with “what if” or “if only.” This reflective mechanism plays a significant role in shaping emotional experiences and guiding future behavior. Though typically triggered by unfavorable or unexpected outcomes, counterfactual thinking can also emerge in mundane, everyday decisions and experiences, revealing its deep entrenchment in...

You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Hazan and Shaver's Attachment Styles

474
Attachment theory, developed initially to explain infant–caregiver bonds, has been extended to illuminate patterns of intimacy in adult romantic relationships. Psychologists Cindy Hazan and Phillip Shaver proposed that the attachment styles observed in infancy form a framework for how individuals approach emotional closeness and conflict in adulthood. These attachment styles—secure, avoidant, and anxious—are linked to enduring patterns of behavior and emotional regulation in...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Behavioral Science
  • Gambling Studies

Background:

  • Scratch cards are a prevalent form of lottery gambling.
  • Limited research exists on the link between thinking styles, scratch card use, and problem gambling.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between cognitive thinking styles, scratch card gambling frequency, and problem gambling severity.
  • To explore individual differences influencing gambling behavior.

Main Methods:

  • Three studies utilized large online samples.
  • Participants completed the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT), Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), and actively open-minded thinking scales.
  • Self-reported scratch card gambling frequency was collected.

Main Results:

  • A negative association was found between CRT scores and PGSI scores.
  • Lower CRT scores correlated with higher scratch card gambling frequency.
  • Problem gambling severity positively correlated with scratch card gambling frequency and willingness to pay for irrelevant information.

Conclusions:

  • Problem gambling severity is associated with specific thinking styles and scratch card gambling behaviors.
  • Thinking style plays a significant role in understanding gambling behavior and problem gambling.
  • Findings contribute to the literature on problem gambling and cognitive factors.
