Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine changes in adoptive parents' relationship quality from pre- to post-child placement.
  • To identify predictors of relationship quality using the VSA model.

Main Methods:

  • 127 adoptive parents were surveyed across three time points: pre-placement, 4-6 weeks post-placement, and 5-6 months post-placement.
  • Assessed global satisfaction, love, ambivalence, intrapersonal vulnerabilities, couple adaptive processes, and adoption-related stressors.

Main Results:

  • Relationship satisfaction and love generally decreased, while ambivalence increased post-placement.
  • Higher self-esteem, relationship maintenance, sexual relationship quality, and partner support predicted greater satisfaction.
  • Relationship maintenance, sexual relationship quality, lower conflict, and infertility history predicted love.
  • Higher conflict predicted increased ambivalence.

Conclusions:

  • Adoptive parents experience a general decline in relationship quality post-child placement.
  • Couple's adaptive processes, such as maintenance and support, are key predictors of marital quality during this transition.
