Summary

Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) may be caused by cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), a condition often leading to cerebral hemorrhage. This report details two such cases, highlighting the rarity of TIAs associated with CAA.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Cerebrovascular Diseases
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a cerebrovascular disease characterized by amyloid protein deposition in brain arteries.
  • Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) are temporary episodes of neurological dysfunction caused by focal brain ischemia.

Observation:

  • Two cases of patients presenting with TIAs and diagnosed with CAA are described.
  • Both patients ultimately succumbed to cerebral hemorrhage.

Findings:

  • The reported TIAs are hypothesized to stem from the underlying CAA.
  • Small infarcts are commonly observed in post-mortem examinations of individuals with CAA.
  • This study adds to the limited reported instances of TIAs occurring in conjunction with CAA, with only six prior cases documented.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This association suggests CAA may be an underrecognized cause of TIAs.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms linking CAA and TIAs.
  • Understanding this relationship could improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for patients with CAA.
