Five month extrauterine survival in a female triploid (69,XXX) child
Annales De Genetique
|December 1, 1977
Insights
A triploid infant (69,XXX) survived for 160 days, significantly longer than the previous record of 9 days for non-mosaic triploidy. This case report explores potential factors contributing to this extended survival in a rare genetic condition.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Developmental Biology
- Neonatal Medicine
Background:
- Triploidy (69,XXX) is a rare chromosomal abnormality.
- Most triploid infants have very short survival times, often less than a week.
- Previous records indicate a maximum survival of 9 days for non-mosaic triploidy.
Abstract:
The case of a (69,XXX) triploid infant who survived 160 days is reported. Previously, the longest survival of a non-mosaic triploid had been 9 days. Possible reasons for this extensive survival are discussed.
