Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is overexpressed in kidney cancer. This study found strong COX-2 positivity in 50% of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC) cases, suggesting a role in cancer development.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Molecular Biology
- Immunohistochemistry
Background:
- Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is implicated in cancer progression, promoting proliferation and angiogenesis while inhibiting apoptosis.
- COX-2 is frequently overexpressed in various malignancies, including renal cell carcinoma (RCC).
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the expression of COX-2 in clear cell RCC.
- To determine the association between COX-2 expression and clinicopathological parameters such as tumor grade, age, sex, and ethnicity.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of 36 clear cell RCC tissue samples.
- Immunohistochemical staining using a COX-2 monoclonal antibody.
- Evaluation of COX-2 expression patterns and correlation with demographic and tumor characteristics.
Main Results:
- COX-2 expression was observed in 18 (50%) of the RCC cases, all exhibiting strong positivity.
- Immunopositive cases demonstrated cytoplasmic membrane localization of COX-2.
- No significant associations were found between COX-2 expression and tumor grade (p=0.457), age (p=0.054), sex (p=0.389), or ethnicity (p=0.568).
Conclusions:
- Strong COX-2 positivity in clear cell RCC suggests its potential role in cell proliferation and carcinogenesis.
- Despite overexpression, COX-2 levels did not correlate with key clinicopathological features in this cohort.
