Hand hygiene01:23

Hand hygiene

6.0K
Asepsis is the practice of preventing or breaking the chain of infection. The nurse employs aseptic techniques to prevent the spread of microorganisms and reduce the risk of diseases. Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of aseptic techniques and is classified into medical and surgical asepsis. Medical asepsis includes hand hygiene and the use of gloves. Surgical asepsis, or the sterile technique, refers to practices that render and keep objects and areas free of microorganisms.

Types of Reports I: Hands-off Report

1.5K
A hand-off report, also known as a change-of-shift report, is a crucial nursing process that ensures the smooth transition of patient care responsibilities between nursing staff.
Following are the key components and categories of hand-off reports:

Muscles of the Forearm that Move the Hand and Fingers01:16

Muscles of the Forearm that Move the Hand and Fingers

2.6K
The muscles of the forearm that move the wrist, hand, and digits are numerous and diverse. They can be classified into two groups based on their location and function — the anterior and posterior compartment muscles.
Anterior Compartment
The anterior compartment muscles originate from the humerus. They primarily function as flexors and are also known as flexor muscles. They typically insert on the carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. The superficial layer includes the flexor carpi...

Chromatin Packaging

22.1K
Each human somatic cell contains 6 billion base-pairs of DNA. Each base-pair is 0.34 nm long, which means that each diploid cell contains a staggering 2 meters of DNA. How is such a long DNA strand packed inside a nucleus measuring only 10 - 20 microns in diameter?
The chromatin
In combination with specialized DNA binding protein called Histones, the DNA double helix forms a compact DNA: protein complex called chromatin. The chromatin itself is further compacted into higher-order...

What is Glycolysis?

177.2K
Overview
Cells make energy by breaking down macromolecules. Cellular respiration is the biochemical process that converts "food energy" (from the chemical bonds of macromolecules) into chemical energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The first step of this tightly regulated and intricate process is glycolysis. The word glycolysis originates from the Latin glyco (sugar) and lysis (breakdown). Glycolysis serves two main intracellular functions: generating ATP and generating...

Area of Science:

  • Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology
  • Public Health
  • Healthcare Quality Improvement

Background:

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) established the 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene (HH) to reduce healthcare-associated infections.
  • Assessing compliance, knowledge, and attitudes is crucial for improving HH practices.
  • Understanding barriers is key to developing effective interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate healthcare personnel (HCP) compliance with the WHO 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene.
  • To assess HCP knowledge and attitudes towards HH.
  • To identify barriers affecting HH compliance.

Main Methods:

  • Direct observation of HH compliance using a modified WHO HH observation form.
  • A 26-question survey to assess HCP knowledge, opinions, and perceived barriers.
  • A focused survey with a subgroup of HCPs to prioritize HH moments.

Main Results:

  • HH compliance was observed in 35% of opportunities, with significant variation across the 5 moments.
  • Only 29% of surveyed HCPs were familiar with the WHO 5 Moments, and 21% could recall all 5.
  • "Before aseptic procedure" was ranked most important, while "after touching patient surroundings" was ranked least important by HCPs.

Conclusions:

  • Healthcare personnel demonstrate infrequent compliance with HH despite frequent opportunities.
  • Lack of recognition of HH opportunities and frequent glove use may contribute to low compliance.
  • Targeted education and interventions are needed to improve HH practices and patient safety.
