Background:

The Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS) links suicidal desire to thwarted belongingness (TB) and perceived burdensomeness (PB).
Previous research shows inconsistent prediction of suicide ideation by interpersonal needs in Korean populations.
Individual differences may moderate the relationship between interpersonal needs and suicidal ideation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate how sociotropy and autonomy, depressogenic personality dimensions, affect the relationship between TB, PB, and suicide ideation in Korean undergraduates.
To test if sociotropy amplifies the effect of TB on suicide ideation.
To test if autonomy moderates the effect of PB on suicide ideation.

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional study with 313 Korean undergraduate students (113 males, 200 females) from a Seoul university.
Participants completed measures of sociotropy, autonomy, TB, PB, depression, and suicide ideation.
Statistical analyses included correlation, regression, and interaction analyses.

Main Results:

Significant correlations were found between sociotropy and depression, and autonomy and depression.
Perceived burdensomeness (PB) and sociotropy were significant predictors of suicide ideation, even after controlling for depression.
Significant interactions indicated that sociotropy amplifies the effect of TB on suicide ideation, and autonomy moderates the effect of PB on suicide ideation.

Conclusions:

Sociotropy and autonomy play crucial roles in the interpersonal theory of suicide within the Korean context.
Personality dimensions significantly alter the pathways through which interpersonal needs contribute to suicide ideation.
Findings highlight the importance of considering individual differences in understanding and preventing suicide ideation in diverse cultural settings.
