Work-up of the HIV-infected patient. Practical approach

There are few comprehensive guidelines for the evaluation of individuals with known or suspected human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Despite the availability of high technology diagnostic testing, routine history taking and physical examination play an important role in the estimation of likelihood of prior infection and staging. Accurate assessment is critical for the anticipation of future needs and the delivery of timely, cost effective, and humane care.
