Hydronephrosis, a kidney condition, is common in women with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Evaluation is recommended, especially for advanced uterovaginal prolapse, to ensure proper kidney function.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Gynecology
- Nephrology
Background:
- Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common condition affecting women.
- The association between POP and upper urinary tract obstruction, such as hydronephrosis, requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of hydronephrosis in patients with pelvic organ prolapse (POP).
Main Methods:
- A systematic literature search was performed using MEDLINE and PubMed (1996-2016) adhering to PRISMA guidelines.
- Eight studies (3 prospective, 5 retrospective) met the inclusion criteria.
Main Results:
- Hydronephrosis prevalence ranged from 3.5% to 30.6% across studies.
- Hydronephrosis correlated with prolapse severity, particularly in uterovaginal prolapse.
- Post-surgical treatment, 56%-83% of patients experienced hydronephrosis resolution.
Conclusions:
- Hydronephrosis is not rare in POP patients.
- Upper tract evaluation is suggested for POP patients, especially with advanced uterovaginal prolapse.
- Consideration for evaluation is advised for those opting for conservative management.
