Measures of Central Tendency02:16

Measures of Central Tendency

21.1K
The "center" of a data set is also a way of describing location. The two most widely used measures of the "center" of the data are the mean (average) and the median. The words "mean" and "average" are often used interchangeably. The substitution of one word for the other is common practice. The technical term is "arithmetic mean" and "average" is technically a center location. However, in practice among non-statisticians,...

Descriptive statistics describe or summarize relevant characteristics of a sample and aid in the analysis of data of interest. When analyzing large quantities of data and developing an inference, one needs to identify a value representative of the entire data set. Characteristics such as central tendency, extreme values, range of measurements, or the most repeated value can help better understand the data.
The central tendency is the most conventionally used data characteristic. It is a...

The histone proteins in the nucleosomes are post-translationally modified (PTM) to increase or decrease access to DNA. The commonly observed PTMs are methylation, acetylation, phosphorylation, and ubiquitination of lysine amino acids in the histone H3 tail region. These histone modifications have specific meaning for the cell. Hence, they are called "histone code". The protein complex involved in histone modification is termed as "reader-writer" complex.

Measures of central tendency are tools used in biostatistics to identify the average or center of a dataset. They offer a single representative value for understanding and summarizing data distribution.
The mean is one such measure, calculated by totaling all values in a dataset and dividing by the number of values. For instance, the mean blood pressure reading (120, 130, 140, 150) would be 135. However, the mean can be affected by extreme values or outliers.
The median, another measure,...

Central tendency refers to the central point or typical value of a dataset. It summarizes the data set with a single value that represents the center of its distribution. The three main measures of central tendency are:
Mean: The arithmetic average of all data points. It is calculated by adding all the values together and dividing by the number of values. The mean is sensitive to extreme values (outliers).
Median: The middle value when the data points are arranged in ascending or descending...

According to some social psychologists, people tend to overemphasize internal factors as explanations—or attributions—for the behavior of other people. They tend to assume that the behavior of another person is a trait of that person, and to underestimate the power of the situation on the behavior of others. They tend to fail to recognize when the behavior of another is due to situational variables, and thus to the person’s state. This erroneous assumption is...

Summary

Researchers developed a new scale to measure the tendency to spread oneself too thin (SOTT). This dispositional tendency is a key predictor of work-nonwork conflicts in employees.

Area of Science:

  • Organizational Psychology
  • Work-Life Balance Research

Background:

  • Work-nonwork conflicts are a significant issue for employees.
  • Dispositional factors are increasingly recognized as antecedents of role conflicts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a scale measuring the dispositional tendency to spread oneself too thin (SOTT).
  • To examine the relationship between SOTT and other dispositional causes of role conflicts.
  • To assess SOTT as a predictor of work-nonwork conflicts.

Main Methods:

  • Exploratory factor analysis (Study 1, N=193) and confirmatory factor analysis (Study 2, N=212) were used for scale development and validation.
  • The study utilized heterogeneous samples of full-time workers.
  • Psychometric properties including test-retest reliability and construct distinctiveness were evaluated.

Main Results:

  • A five-item, unidimensional scale for measuring SOTT was developed and validated.
  • The SOTT scale demonstrated moderate-to-high test-retest reliability.
  • SOTT significantly predicted work-nonwork conflicts, independent of other dispositional antecedents.

Conclusions:

  • The developed SOTT scale is a reliable and valid measure of this dispositional tendency.
  • SOTT is an important, potentially malleable antecedent of work-nonwork conflict.
  • Further research should explore SOTT's impact on other employee outcomes.
