The venturi pump is more efficient than the peristaltic pump for phacoemulsification, using less fluid, time, and energy. This study found the venturi pump statistically superior for cataract surgery.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Surgical Technology
Background:
- Phacoemulsification is a common cataract surgery technique.
- Choosing the right fluidic pump (venturi or peristaltic) can impact intraoperative efficiency.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare intraoperative parameters between venturi and peristaltic pumps in phacoemulsification.
- Evaluate the efficiency of different pump systems during cataract surgery.
Main Methods:
- A prospective, patient-masked study compared venturi and peristaltic pumps in 300 phacoemulsification procedures.
- Standardized techniques (elliptical ultrasound, prefracture) were used.
- Intraoperative parameters and clinical outcomes were measured.
Main Results:
- The venturi pump group used significantly less ultrasound energy, case time, and balanced saline solution.
- No significant differences were observed in phaco time or cataract density.
- Both pump types yielded similar clinical outcomes and visual recovery.
Conclusions:
- The venturi pump is more efficient for minimizing fluid use, case time, and energy during phacoemulsification with prefracture techniques.
- The venturi pump system demonstrated statistical superiority over the peristaltic pump in efficiency metrics.

ATP Driven Pumps II: P-type Pumps
A typical P-type pump has three cytosolic domains: nucleotide-binding (N), phosphorylation (P), and activator (A) domains. These domains are connected to the membrane-spanning helices by short amino acid segments. ATP hydrolysis and covalent phosphoenzyme intermediate formation are crucial parts of the catalytic cycle. At the highly...
