Tonicity describes the capacity of a cell to lose or gain water. It depends on the quantity of solute that does not penetrate the membrane. Tonicity delimits the magnitude and direction of osmosis and results in three possible scenarios that alter the volume of a cell: hypertonicity, hypotonicity, and isotonicity. Background:

Chronic cough is a common presenting sign in dogs.
Bronchiolitis obliterans is a progressive airway disease characterized by inflammation and fibrosis of the bronchioles.
The polypoid form has been documented in cattle and dogs, but the constrictive form is less understood.

Observation:

A 2-year-old Rottweiler presented with acute worsening of chronic cough.
Computed tomography revealed diffuse alveolar patterns and volume loss in multiple lung lobes.
Surgical resection of affected lung lobes was performed for diagnosis and treatment.

Findings:

Histopathology confirmed alveolar collapse and severe chronic bronchial and bronchiolar fibrosis.
The fibrosis led to reduced airway lumen diameter and bronchiolar destruction.
The condition was diagnosed as constrictive bronchiolitis obliterans, a previously unreported form in veterinary species.
