Contact-dependent signaling, as the name suggests, requires that communicating cells be in direct contact with each other.   • Mobile phone use has increased, leading to emerging cases of device-related ACD.

Observation:

  • A 38-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of pruritic, eczematous lesions on her left ear and pre-auricular area.
  • The patient had a history of atopic dermatitis and metal allergy, and used her mobile phone extensively for work.
  • Patch testing revealed positive reactions to nickel sulfate and cobalt chloride.

Findings:

  • The patient's dermatitis resolved completely after avoiding direct contact with her mobile phone.
  • The clinical presentation and patch test results supported a diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis triggered by mobile phone use.
  • Using the speakerphone function led to complete remission of symptoms within six months.

Implications:

  • Dermatologists should consider mobile phone dermatitis in patients presenting with facial, neck, or auricular lesions, especially if unilateral.
  • Awareness of mobile phone dermatitis is crucial, particularly among young adults and adolescents.
  • Patch testing for common metal allergens is a valuable diagnostic tool for suspected mobile phone-induced ACD.
