Early management of acute myocardial infarction

Management of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has changed dramatically since 1962, when the world's first operating coronary care unit opened in our hospital. Recently, thrombolytic agents, aspirin and beta-blockers have been shown to reduce the mortality of patients with AMI if given early. This article reviews management strategies and therapeutic options currently available during the first 24 hours of the hospital phase of AMI.
