Smartphone video examinations (VE) provide a reliable method for assessing shoulder function. This study found VE results closely matched traditional face-to-face (FTF) assessments, offering a convenient alternative.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedics
- Telemedicine
- Digital Health
Background:
- Video examinations (VE) offer accessible, low-cost physician consultations, reducing travel and wait times.
- Smartphone-based VE presents a potential solution for remote patient assessment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To validate the use of smartphones for remote assessment of shoulder function.
- To compare Constant Scores (CS) from VE with conventional face-to-face (FTF) examinations.
Main Methods:
- Prospective study of 51 patients (19-80 years) at a shoulder clinic.
- Patients underwent both FTF and VE assessments in alternating order.
- Comparison of Constant Scores (CS) obtained via both methods.
Main Results:
- 92% of subjects (47/51) successfully completed both examinations.
- Mean difference in CS between VE and FTF was -0.53 points (95% CI: -2.6 to 1.6).
- High agreement (correlation coefficient 0.91, accuracy 0.99, precision 0.91) between VE and FTF CS.
Conclusions:
- Smartphone-based VE reliably estimates shoulder function.
- VE provides a comparable assessment to FTF examinations, with minimal deviation in scores.
