Interpersonal Psychotherapy01:25

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

375
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Understanding Interpersonal Attraction

298
Interpersonal attraction is a fundamental psychological phenomenon influencing human relationships across various contexts. It refers to one person's positive feelings or interests toward another, serving as the foundation for friendships, romantic partnerships, familial bonds, and professional relationships. The nature of interpersonal attraction extends beyond romantic connections, shaping interactions in both short-term and long-term social engagements.Psychological Foundations of...

Levels of Communication I: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, and Small Group

15.0K
Interpersonal communication focuses on the exchange of messages between two people.
We can participate in these relationships through verbal, nonverbal, and mediated communication. We engage in verbal communication when we use words during our interaction to convey specific meanings. On the other hand, nonverbal communication refers to various factors that can impact how we understand each other—for example, facial expressions.
We interact with others using mediated technologies like the...

Role of Affect in Interpersonal Attraction01:24

Role of Affect in Interpersonal Attraction

221
Affect plays a crucial role in shaping interpersonal evaluations and perceptions. Emotions influence how individuals judge and respond to others, often determining whether interactions are viewed positively or negatively. This effect can manifest directly through interactions with the person in question or indirectly via associations with unrelated emotional experiences.Direct Effects of Affect on AttractionAffect directly influences interpersonal attraction when a person’s behavior...

Aggression01:47

Aggression

30.4K
Humans engage in aggression when they seek to cause harm or pain to another person. Aggression takes two forms depending on one’s motives: hostile or instrumental. Hostile aggression is motivated by feelings of anger with intent to cause pain; a fight in a bar with a stranger is an example of hostile aggression. In contrast, instrumental aggression is motivated by achieving a goal and does not necessarily involve intent to cause pain (Berkowitz, 1993); a contract killer who murders for...

Bullying

8.9K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Summary

Interpersonal violence (IPV) rates are high in Malawi, a country without collective violence. Public health initiatives should address alcohol use and investigate factors contributing to IPV.

Area of Science:

  • Trauma surgery
  • Public health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Interpersonal violence (IPV) contributes significantly to the global trauma burden, with regional variations.
  • High rates of IPV in sub-Saharan Africa are often linked to collective violence.
  • Malawi, lacking a history of collective violence, presents a unique setting to study IPV drivers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the incidence and characteristics of interpersonal violence (IPV) trauma in Malawi.
  • To compare IPV victims with non-intentional trauma victims.
  • To identify risk factors for mortality among IPV victims.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of a trauma registry (2009-2016) at Kamuzu Central Hospital, Lilongwe, Malawi.
  • Comparison of adult (>16 years) IPV victims with non-intentional trauma victims.
  • Log binomial regression analysis to determine mortality risk factors for IPV victims.

Main Results:

  • IPV accounted for 34.5% of 72,488 trauma cases.
  • IPV victims were more likely to be male, younger, and admitted at night.
  • Alcohol use was reported by 16.5% of IPV victims versus 4.4% of others; head and torso injuries increased mortality risk, while alcohol use was associated with lower mortality.

Conclusions:

  • High IPV injury rates persist in Malawi, irrespective of collective violence.
  • Public health strategies should focus on alcohol use and explore the roles of "mob justice," poverty, and intimate partner violence in IPV.
  • Further research is needed to understand and mitigate IPV in this region.
