1Klinik für Neurologie und Psychiatrie Medizinischen Akademie Magdeburg.
Insights
Tiapride effectively treated extrapyramidal hyperkinesis in 34 children. Over two-thirds of patients experienced significant symptom reduction or complete remission of their neurological disorders.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Neurology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Extrapyramidal hyperkinesis encompasses a group of movement disorders.
- Effective pharmacological interventions are crucial for managing pediatric hyperkinetic syndromes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of Tiapride in treating extrapyramidal hyperkinesis in children.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 34 children diagnosed with extrapyramidal hyperkinesis was treated with Tiapride.
- Clinical outcomes and side effects were monitored.
Main Results:
- Twenty-two out of 34 children (approximately 65%) showed considerable reduction or complete disappearance of extrapyramidal syndromes.
- The primary observed side effect was a reduction in vigilance during the initial adjustment phase.
Conclusions:
- Tiapride demonstrates significant efficacy in managing extrapyramidal hyperkinesis in pediatric patients.
- The medication is generally well-tolerated, with transient vigilance reduction being the main adverse effect.
Abstract:
34 children with extrapyramidal hyperkinesis were treated with Tiaprid. With 22 children the extrapyramidal syndromes could be reduced considerably or disappeared. A reduction of vigilance in the phase of adjustment was the only side effect.
