Arterial hypertension (AH) prevalence increased despite improved awareness and treatment. While more people are diagnosed and treated, primary prevention of AH remains ineffective, highlighting a need for better public health strategies.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Arterial hypertension (AH) is a significant public health concern.
  • Repeated epidemiological studies are crucial for tracking disease dynamics and intervention effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess trends in AH prevalence and blood pressure (BP) control in the European Russian Federation.
  • To compare 2017 data with previous surveys from 1998, 2002, and 2007.

Main Methods:

  • A representative sample from the European part of the Russian Federation was studied.
  • Data collection occurred in 1998 (pilot), 2002, 2007, and 2017.

Main Results:

  • AH prevalence rose from 35.5% to 43.3% over 19 years.
  • Awareness and treatment coverage improved to 76.9% and 79.3% respectively.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Effective BP control in treated patients increased from 14.3% to 34.9%.
  • Conclusions:

    • Epidemiological indicators for AH awareness, treatment, and management have improved.
    • The rising prevalence of AH suggests primary prevention strategies are currently insufficient.
