Summary

Early psychiatric classifications before the 1900s were unreliable, with low diagnostic name consistency across systems. However, 11 key terms like "mania" and "melancholia" reveal core 19th-century American psychopathology views.

  • Psychiatric classification systems prior to the early 1900s are often considered disorganized and lacking analytical value.
  • Sixteen distinct classificatory systems predating World War I and the Kraepelinian era were identified for analysis.

Observation:

  • A total of 827 diagnostic names were extracted from these 16 pre-1900s classification systems.
  • Classification unreliability was a significant issue, with an average name match rate of only 15% across seven American systems.

Findings:

  • Despite overall unreliability, 11 diagnostic terms demonstrated consistent recognition across the analyzed systems.
  • These consistently recognized terms include: mania, acute mania, chronic mania, melancholia, general paralysis, senile dementia, epileptic insanity, hysterical insanity, moral insanity, idiocy, and cretinism.
