    Background:

    • The American Council for Graduate Medical Education mandated 25 teaching assistant (TA) cases for graduating surgical residents in 2014-2015.
    • Variations in the definition of a teaching assistant (TA) case exist across different residency programs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the number of cases general surgery residents log as a teaching assistant (TA).
    • To determine the operative settings and types of cases performed by residents acting as TAs.
    • To identify variations in TA case logging and definitions among programs.

    Main Methods:

    • An online survey comprising 21 questions was distributed to general surgery program directors nationwide.
    • The survey, conducted between August and October 2015, collected data on TA case numbers, operative settings, and case types.
    • A total of 88 responses were received from 200 surveys sent.

    Main Results:

    • Fifty-two percent of responding programs reported that their graduating residents log over 25 TA cases.
    • Senior residents served as TAs in the operating room in all 88 responding programs.
    • TA roles extended to the clinic (59%), floors (66%), and emergency room (70%) in a significant percentage of programs.

    Conclusions:

    • Most general surgery residency programs exceed the minimum TA case requirement.
    • Significant variability exists in the definition of a TA case and the types of cases logged, highlighting a need for clearer guidelines from the American Council for Graduate Medical Education.
    • Senior residents actively participate as TAs in diverse clinical settings beyond the operating room.
